Obama is shelving a plan announced in the final days of the Bush presidency to open much of the U.S. coast to oil and gas drilling, including 130 million acres off California’s shores from Mendocino to San Diego.
Obama’s Interior Secretary Ken Salazar put the plan on hold Tuesday while his agency conducts a 180-day review. But Salazar’s critical comments about the proposal made clear that the new administration will rewrite it if not completely scrap it.
"It opened the possibility of oil and gas leases along the entire Eastern seaboard, portions of offshore California and the far eastern Gulf of Mexico with almost no consultation from states, industry or community input," Salazar said at a news conference in Washington. "In my view, it was a headlong rush of the worst kind."

Already this year democrats scrapped oil and gas leases in Utah and opened the 111th Congress by introducing a bill to permanently prohibit drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
During his acceptance speech, Obama said he wanted to end American’s addiction on foreign oil.
"I will set a clear goal as president: in ten years we will finally end our dependence on oil in the Middle East," said Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama.
Stanford University Professor James Sweeney, the director of the Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency, is not a believer.
"If he means what it sounds like it means, it’s impossible." He says the U.S. consumes about 21 million barrels of oil a day.
"We import two-thirds of our oil now and the only way we can become independent is shut down industry and tell people they can’t drive, tell people they can’t fly," said Professor Sweeney.
Obama will hobble America and we’ll all be living like the Amish.

OH yes by all means lets bleed the rest of the world dry. What right do we have to consume majority of the world oil when we have the stuff right in our backyard. There is no logic behind draining the rest of the world of resources. Clearly we dont deserve it look what we have already done to ourselves as a nation.
Yes, Obama will turn us into an Amish nation single handedly, because there is no senate or house of reps to question anything he does. Despite what you neo-cons think Democrats aren’t out to doom the country. Just because you can’t think outside your theory of tax cuts doesnt mean your the only ones that are right.

He campainged and won the election, I’ll remind you, based in part on his promise to reduce or eliminate US dependence on foreign oil, coupled with green initiatives.
Do I need to remind you that, had the US auto industry headed toward greener fields a decade ago, a large part of the US’s economic crisis would have been averted.
But no. Four dollar gas helped put people out of their homes. And all shills for Exxon such as yourself did was try to gain more oil ops for Big Daddy Exxon.
You brought it on yourself, people like you. But the rest of us do not deserve it. THAT’S the problem.

Forget the goats and use bicycles to trim as many fat lazy Americans as possible. You can get three wheeled bicycles to haul things around in. You can even get creative and invent a passenger powered bus that would have pedals at every seat. That would be as green as you can get after peddling your way around.

Maybe the electric windmills will vote for the democrats in the next election. That’ll probably be it when oil is 5 bucks a gallon and your "green" electric bill costs 4 times as much as it does now.

This is another example that Obama doesn’t know what he is doing, it could take years to develop a vehicle that isn’t dependent on gasoline, and use strictly alternatives.
In the mean-time we could be drilling off the coast and in Alaska, it has been years since there has been an oil spill, and in addition, today’s process is safer than it was 10-20 years ago.
Obama lied during his acceptance speech about ending the United States dependence on foreign oil, if a situation were to occur such as the oil embargo’s of the mid-1970s, when people advised the Ford Administration that we needed to look for alternatives. This at a time when you waited in line for hours, or could only buy gas on certain days.
As soon as the crisis was over, it was back to business as usual and there was no further talk about creating an alternative to cut our dependence on foreign oil.
Here we are back in September 2008, paying over 4 dollars a gallons for gas, while the oil companies were one of the few businesses in the United States to show billion dollar profits for that quarter.
Now that gas has dropped to $1.90 a gallon, the talk has once again died, and Obama wants to stop drilling in Alaska and on the coast, because of tree-huggers who have noting better to do, than complain about a process that is 100% safer than it was.
Barack Obama is listening to people like Al Gore, who is so demented, that he tells people he invented the Internet, and that Global Warming is destroying the Earth, when the country as a whole, suffered some of the clodest weather in 30-40 years.
People are complaining about wind technology that could produce energy and save billions of dollars a year, and nuclear technology, which is safer than it was as well.
Obama is putting the screws to the very people who voted for him and believed his diatribe about caring for the people and the country.
