I keep hearing in context of the middle east and in particular Libya, that crude oil prices are dropping for the barrel. I dont understand why gas prices are rising if that’s the case?

I’ve heard everything from 10 to 100. Is there a range? (Does heavy crude require xxx while light crude require x?)
Specifically I am wondering about a refinery like the Irving Oil Refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. It apparently refines 300 000 bpd, shipped in from somewhere…anybody know where?
Thanks

Seems like whenever something happens, no matter what it is, they use as an excuse to raise the price of oil.
They have us over a barrel and are playing ‘hide the wienie’ with us.

Bush actively contributed to the rise in oil prices in 08 by spending billions of taxpayer dollars on oil to fill up the strategic petroleum reserves. Obama is trying to do what he can to lower the price by opening up the strategic petroleum reserves. Now you know the truth!!

I’ve heard the gas price trend closely follows the crude oil trends but gas prices are a little slower. So is it possible to predict a rapid rise in gas prices say 2 weeks before it actually happens? Like if you see oil prices going up how long would it take gas prices to follow? [...]

I can’t see the logic behind the calls for more production in the US. Isn’t the price of oil just determined by global supply and demand?
@whiteflame55
So the US government would tell Exxon and BP and Texaco what price they have to sell their oil for in America? And that they may not export any?

Isn’t the over 0/barrel price just on the futures market? I have heard that the oil companies are not actually paying any more for the crude oil they are buying right now than they were before. That is why their profits were at record highs during the last spike in the futures market.
And IF this [...]
