There’s really no telling how much more oil or natural gas pockets are hidden underground. New oil pockets are being found all the time. The reason for all the worry is that new underground oil pockets aren’t being discovered as numerous as they were. This indicates that new oil findings won’t keep up with the demand for oil; basically, we’ll run out. However, I’m sure there’s plenty more oil underground, probably more than the total we’ve used in the history of the human race so far. The problem is we can’t find it.

The Earth has an extremely large surface. People seeking oil can’t just pick a random spot and start drilling. That wastes time and money, therefore they drill where there is the most probability that oil will be relatively close to the surface. I’m not exactly sure how they do this, but I can guess that they drill close to another drilling sight, but eventually the oil in that area runs out and they have to find brand new sights to drill. This takes time. The majority of the oil now may be deeper below the surface than ever before.

Well – they’re speaking of "peak drilling" right now. Right now we have as much oil as we can ever have – and in the future this supply will begin to fall off. So obviously we can’t keep using it like we did – we’ve run through our supply.

But if a few brains can be applied to the problem – and we can quit forking gigantic sums to Big Oil, we might get quite a long ways.
