How are we going to live when we run out of petroleum?

Given that the petroleum is finish, probably in 20 years and that there seams not to be an affordable and realistic alternative for it (sorry for those who have blind fate in science: neither biofuels or hydrogen will save us). What do you believe that ours live will look like when air and car transportation will end and when plastic will disappear? How are we going to live when we run out of petroleum?

I don’t know about you, but I’m going for solar power and bio-diesel. And plastic can be made out of soy, too.

We use the champagnes in our fridges.

Mmm solar is good. Biomass isn’t great for the environment but it will last way longer than coal or oil ever will. Or if you’re feeling crazy try vegetable oil on your car and see if it works or if it wrecks your car (probably would do the latter =\). Or we could make new styles of cars with giant hydroelectric mill-thingos on the back and have water splashing all over the place… Thaaat would be weird.
There’s biodegradable plastic available which is good for the environment that’s made of tapioca.

I mean, even if we finish petroleum, there’s still coal, natural gas and uranium isn’t there? ^_^" Not that it’s good for the environment…

i think we’re freakin’ f**kd up… the "government" will be forced to show their "highly classified" secrets… like how aliens travel from distant galaxies…. do you think this is a blind faith??? i dont think so… you are not thinking outside of the box if you say that the "government" didnt hid anything that’s something extra-unusual… etc.. etc…
the russians way back from the past World Wars, had a blue print of an invention, a "flying disk" which can fly horizontally and then vertically in split seconds… so… its up to you…

I do not think people have any idea how much oil there is left, check out the link below and make up your own mind, and this is very interesting reading, for everyone, i read this many years ago.

I think there are many alternatives being looked at that we are not yet aware of. Chemical giants that have built their fortunes on the petrochemical industry are not going to just die off or let someone else take away all their profits.

Another thing is that there have been many alternatives put forward in the past that were then dismissed as too expensive in the days of cheap fuel. These options are now being re-examined with a view to using modern methods to see whether they can now be cost-effective.

Just for all you conspiracy lovers out there, don’t forget all the stories of cheap fuels that were bought out and supressed by the industry giants :)

The transition is underway. This is precisely the sort of thing markets are good at. Let the price rise (and let those who profit from that price rise, get their profits — populist bellyaching does no good), because the rising price creates the incentive for innovation and for moves to other fuels as well as other lifestyles.

Guess we’ll have to rely on tachyon generators like Tesla tried to get the government to do many years ago. He came up with a way to produce energy for cars, houses, etc, by harnessing free tachyons in the atmosphere. Of course the oil and gas moguls did not like that and squashed the idea.

you should understand we have lots of petroleum natural gas etc. which is in an unrecoverable state by todays technology but it is likely we will have some day technology to extact it economically. then global warming may have a blessing in that it melts polar ice caps, which are likely to contain massive natural reserves.so donot go by the alarmists, its not a blind faith in science its just a decent probability.

How did people live before petroleum? Of course their were a whole lot less of them then.
