How could we modify the structure or composition of petroleum in order to make it a "better" gasoline?

I’m guessing my teacher is looking for a way so we can burn petroleum more efficiently and be able to use it for more things. At least that’s what I’m hoping he means…

  1. Bob Says:

If the different hydrocarbon molecules used in gasoline are more branched it will increase the octane level of the gasoline.

That depends on what you mean by "better"

    Do you mean

    1. Cheaper
    2. More efficient buring
    3. Cleaner burning
    4. Improved odor
    5 non-toxic
    6 etc?…..

    "Better" in what way?

You could improve the refinement to remove more impurities and increase the octane, but then you’re also making it more expensive.
