I know few engineers who work fewer than 45-50 hrs/week, and at times 70 and more. Some of that time might be at home, but it is not a banker’s job or a school teacher’s job. It is serious work.
37 to 44 hours a week, times 50 weeks, is typically on the law books. Whether or not you cave to pressure for overtime is another story. The big question is, can you commute? Are you within an hour’s drive of a local refinery, or are you considering an oil rig in the ocean?
If you want to job where you are home every night then you best find something other than engineering. Maybe your should consider teaching or being a dentist.
Engineers work when they are needed. If you are involved with a well, it may need your attention any time of the day or night.
