IF the lease has expired, you would have to contact energy companies and see if there is any interest in renewing the lease of getting a new on I have heard that active gas wells in Texas are down 50% in the last year,
and if they haven’t drilled in the 5 yrs they had the lease, I doubt anything will change anytime soon
NE Penna is the hot territory now with the Marcellus Shale formation – -active wells are up 100% in the last years and there is lots of activity going up – I have read stories about people getting $5000 and up PER ACRE just for teh lease rights recently.
I own land there that an energy company is drilling under close by and I should finally start seeing some gas royalty payments in the first half of 2010. I bought the land after the lease right were sold and the previous owner only got $25-50/acre 3 yrs ago – he still owns 200+ acres and they are actually drilling a gas well on his property, so he’ll be getting some pretty good royalty income for a long time to come – easily $10,000 a month even with low current natural gas prices once the gas starts flowing down the pipeline to market next year

If there is interest in your mineral rights an exploration company will contact you to lease your mineral rights. You do not need to be in a hurry unless you need the money. It is usually best to wait and be contacted rather to initiate contact, in my opinion.
