If an independent contractor works in Louisiana for a Texas based company, which state labor laws apply?

I am an independent contractor and I was working in Louisiana as a Mineral Title Research Landman for a company that is based in Dallas Texas. I no longer work with this company and they refuse to pay me my last check for the last two weeks of work that I did for them. They claim that I am subject to Texas law and I claim that since we were working in Louisiana, that state’s laws apply. Who is right?

Whatever state you are working in, is what laws apply. I would try looking into the legal level if I were you. See if they are allowed to contract their work in LA or even go outside of TX consult an attorney. Sorry to hear about that. Good Luck with everything.

You should publish the name of the company in your comments so that other Landmen like myself won’t be taken advantage of.
