Is it illegal to sell alternatives to petroleum?

Say some group of people find a substance that isn’t petroleum, but looks like it and so they sell it. Is’t that illegal?

  1. Because I said so Says:

It would only be illegal if they claim it was petroleum. Synthetic petroleum is sold all the time but it is marketed as synthetic and not petroleum.

  2. raina_vissora Says:

If would depend on how they’re selling it.

They can’t misrepresent it and say it *is* petroleum. But there’s nothing stopping them from selling it as an alternative.
