No but two galleries on one block should actually help you. We have gallery walks in my town and we have 20 galleries all within walking distance. It attracts 3000-5000 people every month when they have an open house.

Some landlords have "non-competition clauses," but it's their call. Don't think of the guy next to you as a competitor since all art is unique.

It's the same with book stores. Would you rather go to a town with one book store or two?

It depends on your lease and your city laws.

I live in a town with LOTS of art galleries, and this would be a plus. While people may go into one of the businesses initially, the odds of them visiting both are really high. This should bring you more business, not less.

No reason why not, unless there is something restricting this in the lease (and in many places this would not be enforceable). But look on the bright side. Unless the other gallery is selling identical stuff people browsing to buy art are more likely to go to a place where they can browse several galleries instead of one stand alone gallery. There are several studies that suggest that, in an area of retail where people browse such as art, having a precinct with several similar businesses improves everyone's sales.

You should have made a stipulation in your lease that there would be no other art galleries within a certain radius if you didn't want the competition. Doesn't mean the landlord would have gone for it, but, if you had it in writing, you would have saved yourself from having the same shop basically next door to you.

Where I lease my office, there are 2 donut shops on either side of the street. The same property owners own both pieces of land.
