Petroleum?

How does it work??
How could it be used?
Are there any hidden environment or social costs?
What is being done in australia in regards to petroleum?
How can you convince someone to increase it?

    OK:

    >How does it work??

It’s burnt in internal combusion engines to produce pressure, which turns the motor. Often used in cars.

    >How could it be used?

Other than to fuel engines? Well, crude oil (from which petroleum is isolated) yields a lot of other compounds – kerosene, diesel, natural gas, alchohol, a variety of hydrocarbons for the chemical industry, solvents, and many, many more.
These can be used by themselves, and many of them can be used to produce plastics.

    >Are there any hidden environment or social costs?

"Hidden"? I though most people were aware of pollution issues. But anyway:
Carbon dioxide emission causes the greenhouse effect, and nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides contribute to acid rain. These are all produced during gasoline combustion.
Crude oil has to be transported large distances, and it is toxic and highly environmentally-damaging if spilt.

    >What is being done in australia in regards to petroleum?

    I have no idea.

    >How can you convince someone to increase it?

At the moment, much of the economy depends on petroleum-based compounds and processes. Sadly, it is still essential, but we are in fact trying to find ways of reducing our dependance on it by things like alternative energy sources.
