Should We Use All of the Above Approach for New Energy?

John McCain suggested do everything possible for energy now. Nuclear, drill for oil, natural gas, coal, etc…

This would substantially help our economy by not sending money outside the country for energy, and perhaps lowering prices.
Every President elected, since JFK, has promised energy independence. Nothing so far.
Ok, I see some of the answers, get your tire gauges ready.

I think we should. You also have to consider the realities of the alternative fuels at the moment- they are FAR from perfect. Biodiesel isnt just pressd out of soybeans- it’s blended at a low percentage with petroleum diesel fuel. You can’t run it at higher percentages because it screws up the engine.

Hybrid cars are just fine BUT- they still use gas and it takes a very long time (in some cases nearly 12 years) to balance the savings in fuel economy against the additional cost of buying the car in the first place.

We HAVE to use the "all of the above" solution because face it- people are NOT going to park thier cars, sit and wait for the technology for clean energy to catch up to the current energy needs of the world. In other words, while the scientists are working on perfecting clean energy, we have to keep driving back and forth to work in the cars we have now. To do that, we need to keep using oil for the meantime. So- if we’re going to have to use it for a while longer, we may as well use our own oil rather than keep making the OPEC countires rich. Let’s put Americans to work. Let’s put all the money we’ve been giving to overseas nations into our OWN economy. It would put a lot of Americans to work, lower the trade deficit and lower gasoline prices.

i dont believe in the sanctity of oil

    Drill here drill now.

  4. Earth: The Connected Home Says:

Yes, all of the above, starting with Drill Baby Drill.

If we beat the rest of the world to the new technologies, we will be exporting it, for a profit. We need to get busy!

  5. FakeGods Says:

Nuclear takes to much tax payer money to be popular for long

  6. C.J. Says:

    Drill, baby drill!!

  7. guitarmas5 Says:

We don’t need to drill. We need to find alternative energy NOW! Mccain wants to drill drill drill which will only stall our progress towards independence. Obama wants to be independent within ten years! I know who’s got my vote.

  8. Hunter Says:

YES!!! Ask yourself this: Why haven’t we?

  9. NBAfan Says:

    I agree with McCain

  10. tabbi8407 Says:

well… seeing as how mccain always votes against alternative fuels sources…. why do you think he’d be for it???? besides him just saying what he has to say to get elected….at 72!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get retired already….. his wife is already the beer heiress…. he needs no more money…. and is SOOOOO disconnected with real americans…. he is just fooling himself…. he may win because the popular vote doesn’t mean everything…. but he will not win with our peoples consensus….

  11. GJL Says:

Drill, and you will get six months worth of oil, which will lower your gas price by 4 cents…if the oil isn’t sold to Japan, which it will likely be.

Drilling is stupid. Encouraging conservation is not. Higher CAFE standards, tax rebates for buying fuel efficient cars…+ clean coal and solar, wind, etc.

Drilling will just make the oil speculators richer. Won’t do anything for us.

  12. pidpit Says:

Yes, but we also need to start drilling at home IMMEDIATELY. But good luck with that as the enviroweenies will wail and gnash their teeth because of *gasp* global warming.

The bottom line is we have to free ourselves from the use of fossil fuels all together, while cleaner coal and such are good someday those resources will run out. I believe that our best hope for the future is nuclear fusion (not fission, which is what we use now) Fusion is the same process that the sun is powered by, the bonding of two atoms. Its Clean, VERY efficient, and its safe. The radioactive waste produced is only dangerously radioactive for about 100 years, which seems like a long time but the waste from a fission reaction is dangerous for about 10,000 years. We need our government to throw all of its weight behind this technology that could change the world for the better. Right now the United kingdom is about the only nation putting A lot of effort into it. But The US put a man on the moon in ten years I know we can do this.
