Why are natural gas and electricity prices regulated by the government, but the price of oil (gasoline) isn’t?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Shouldn’t we be doing something to regulate the profiteering by the oil companies? I’m all for a free-market, capitalist system (I’m a republican at heart), but to allow these greedy bums to make billions in profit each quarter and then to claim that they’re just passing the increase along to the consumer is BS. Say by some freak chance the congress lets American companies drill offshore for oil and gas?

Would it be better to see Exxon’s profits go through the roof or send that money to Saudi Arabia and Iran?

Why do gas company profits go up when the price of oil goes up?

I don’t think gas is all that expensive. It’s just a price we pay attention to and it fluctuates more than other expenses. But it really bothers me that companies like Exxon make greater profits when they have to pay more for oil.

Why do Republicans think drilling for more oil will somehow lower the gas prices?

The way NAFTA is set up,
the highest bid buys the oil
no matter what country
McCain likes the free trade
the way it is, and doesn’t want
any changes to it
So if the Saudis out-bid Exxon/Mobile,
we will still pay roughly the same high
prices for gasoline
only it will be the Saudis selling us
what is supposed to be our own oil

If drilling for oil in ANWAR will lower the cost of gas – why does Alaska have the highest price for gas?

Miss Kitty: you seriously think there are no oil wells in Alaska???? You’ve never heard of the North slope, Valdez, the Exxon oil spill, or the Alaskan pipeline?
