Vet told me to give my cat hairball treatment, the main ingredient is petroleum jelly. Can this cause diarrhea?

I’ve been giving it to her 2 times a week like the vet said, to help with her hairballs, and I noticed today there was diarrhea in her litter box. Could that be caused by the petroleum jelly?

How much are you giving her? Cut back a bit if she is having diarrhea.
I give my cats plain petroleum jelly (vaseline). Two of them LOVE it, and will lick it off my finger and want more. My vet said just dip my finger in it and let them lick it off twice a week. I don’t think it is even half a teaspoon.

Yep, it greases them up a bit but it also gets the hairballs to pass.

Depends on the amount of pet. jelly you are giving your cat. You might want to cut back a bit. I give my cat about one teaspoon a month as a maintenance dose. Five years old, no throwing up of hairballs, no diarrhea.

Look at it this way…If her poop is runny, she’s not plugged up with hairballs!

We live on a farm and have 6 cats that live in the barn. The way we help them with the hairball thing is when we feed them in a big pan about 6 cups cat food we put about 6 tbsp of oil like frying oil or margarine in the food and stir it up. It will make their coat very nice and help with hairballs. Also helps them maintain a good weight.
And yeah she is probably getting diarrhea from it so back it off a bit maybe give her a little less.
