What is the best (natural gas) water heater on the market for the price ($300-$500)?

I’ve had a Whirlpool Flamelock water heater that I’ve been fortunate to have gotten 6 years use from. I’ve heard that these are one of the worst water heaters anyone could buy so now it’s time for me to venture into a bigger and better water heater that will LAST!

all glass lined water heaters currently manufactured are of about the same quality. the ones with a`longer warranty are only adding insurance to the price. at one time you could purchase copper lined tanks that lasted a good 20 years, but now all they make is disposable junk.

Spend a little more, get a lot more. We have an Aquastar that is 15 years old and still going strong.

The same source will have NG units as well.

Rinnai is a really good brand. It is an instantanious water heater. You can get a tax credit on it too.
The Noritz is also a good one. You usually get what you pay for.

Been a Rheem dealer for 30yrs and had good luck with the brand. They usually last 10plus years on average.

Since there are only about 5 tank type water heater manufacturers worldwide , guess what you got a State or Rheem that was relabeled (both had done the whirlpools and GEs)
AO Smith does many of the Ace and other hardware store brands .as do State and Rheem .
Avoid the China made heaters as they use the lead ceramic linings (guess who has some made in China now ) You gotta check before you buy

GE’s Rheem water heaters from The Home Depot have proven themselves over and over. If you have Home Depot install their best 12 year models, you can get an additional Once in a lifetime replacement warranty with a new water heater and labor included.

I can’t tell you what to buy but I can tell you that we just bought and installed an upgrade GE heater from Home Depot and after only 4 months we are having problems with it. I would avoid those two brands in the future. We need products we can trust.
