What is the difference between majoring in geology and engineering for petroleum related careers?

I’ve read that both geology majors and petro related engineer majors are hired by oil companies for the field. What’s the difference between what geologists and engineers do?

Geologists help to explore and develop oil and natural gas fields using various mapping interpretations as to what the layers of rock under the ground might look like. They use rock outcrops and other analogies to refine their mapping. They plan where to drill wells and how to obtain Information from those wells as to rock cores & other samples plus a whole host of measurements obtained from electrical cables run into the wells. Then after a well or wells are drilled and measurements are analyzed they then refine their maps looking for other drilling locations.

Petroleum Engineers have 3 main roles in the oil & gas industry with that being Drilling Engineers, Reservoir Engineers, and Production Engineers. They often work in teams with various disciplines including Geologists to design oilfields, design the actual well architectures, and to optimize oil & gas production over the life of the fields.

Kind of a guess here but I’m going to say that the geologists are hired to find places that may contain oil and would be suitable for excavation. The engineers would be hired to actually plan out how to extract the oil from that location.

Geologists fill a creative and almost artistic function, using scientific analyses. Engineers fill an administrative and financial function using engineering standards to establish certain feasabilities.
The previous poster is also correct.
The geologist finds the deposit and the engineer brings it into production.
