What is the process for making electrical tape from petroleum?
I am trying to figure out the steps/process of how electrical tape becomes electrical tape from the refining of oil from our ocean basins.

There are various methods and this is a brief overview,
From the oil separate the relevant fraction and make ethylene.
Take the ethylene and react with Chlorine to form Vinyl Chloride monomer (VCM).
Polymerise VCM to for Polyvinyl chloride.
This material is then compounded with other ingredients to get the required properties of strength, flexibility, colour etc. The compound is extruded into a thin film and coated with an adhesive, rolled onto a spool and cut to length and width.
Voila, you have electrical tape
