Why do people complain about gas prices when "They,We & I" buy/sell & push up the price based on speculation?

It just seems ridiculous that gas prices are up so much form over a year ago, for that matter since 9/11. Our oil reserves are well above what they were then & production has increased significantly. With the options traders on wall street, and the average investor looking to invest in their future, they are buying and selling gas futures and pushing up the price per gallon to near all time highs and taking their profits with them. Yes, some economical and political factors are at fault just as are natural weather related concerns. (i.e. Hurricane Katrina, etc.) I would just like to know what some of you think we could do as a whole to bring down prices without resorting to carpooling, using mass transit, or going green.

Thank you for your inputs.

I’m not too sure if the general public (me and you) can do anything about reducing the price of gas/petrol. The companies have a bit of a monopoly on this source as we all require it to run our motor vehicles so we will end up paying whatever they put forward to us – the consumer at the pump.

My advice would be to take notice of the price of gas/petrol on a weekly basis and see when it is at it’s cheapest. Then just before it is increased on a weekly basis – fill up!!

Over here in Australia we have 4c per litre supermarket dockets that we can use at selected service stations offering a discount on petrol. I also tend to fill up on Tuesday evening / early Wednesday morning. By the time Wednesday afternoon comes around the price has jumped up 14-15c per litre!

Currently we are playing around the average of $1.40 per litre and several years ago it used to be around $0.70 per litre – what can you do?
