why do so many people think that the United States of America is a Democracy?

The United States of America was founded on, and is outlined in the Constitution as well as the Declaration of Independence as a REPUBLIC. Remember the Pledge of Allegiance? It says, "And to the republic for which it stands."

If you read a copy of the Constitution, it says in Article IV (sec. 4) "The
United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government…"

In a democracy the "majority rules" – and the minority loses. A hypothetical example can demonstrate the idea. Pretend that you’re a land owner, and that I would like to buy some of your property. You don’t want to sell this property because it’s been in your family for several generations. In a democracy, I could gather a dozen other land owners together, proposing that we divide your land between us. We will allow you to vote on the proposition, because this IS a democracy after all — and you will lose thirteen to one.
That’s a democracy! In a Republic, nothing can outvote your individual rights! They are unalienable. Abraham Lincoln said, "We the people are the rightful masters of Congress and the courts. Not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow men who pervert the Constitution.

I could go on and on but I’d just like to re-pose the question. Why is it that most people say that America is a Democracy? On T.V. and in the media in general you hear that all the time. Even the saying: "Majority Rules" is seemingly a part of the American fabric. However it is CLEARLY a bastardization of the documents that America was founded on.

So, what do you good people think of all this?
Montecor… what in my question or statement was not accurate? I don’t remember saying anything about the Republican party. I merely pointed out that this country was founded as a REPUBLIC. and I gave a direct quote from the United States Constitution…As far as watching the History channel to learn about real American History? No thanks, I prefer books over propaganda and lies told by the mainstream media. But your comment about the History Channel is quite revealing. I can see where you’ve gotten your education.
Montecor…again, I NEVER said anything about Republicans or Democrats. I quoted the Constitution where it guarantees every state in the union a republican form of government. Get a clue. I’m not talking about the Republican Party! I’m talking about a REPUBLIC and the term Republican form of government is a reference to Republicanism. LOOK IT UP! I’m not partisan, I have a brain!

I hear you.I cant believe it either. Its the kids that bother me,that they are not being taught that in school.A Republic is a much fairer system then a Democracy. We have really gone off course.People also seem to not understand that States are suppose to have more power then the Government.Just read Madison’s Federalists Papers.

Edit;Benjamin Franklin said "we gave you a Republic if you can keep it".But for 200 years people have tried to turn it into a Democracy,so right now we are a little of both.

    I don’t, mainly because I don’t give a rat’s @ss. I live in Texas…and yes, we *are* our own country.

  3. ZonieGirl Says:

You are correct of course. There is a lot of ignorance out there. Many people don’t know the difference between the two.

  4. fartley1 Says:

Democracy is a government doomed to eventual failure simply because of its "mob rule" mentality. It’s too bad not enough people realize that being a Republic was the original intent of the Founding Fathers. Please do not get this confused with the current Republican party because both parties have switched places and philosophies since the mid nineteenth century…

  5. nostradamus02012 Says:

so sorry to have to correct you but the usa is a democratic republic.

sorry if that doesn’t fit with the wordsmithing of the republicans, but it is a simple fact.

  6. Montecore Says:

There was no republican party until 1854, until then you had the federalist party. So you see the word ‘republic’ had nothing to do with the not yet created republican party. The word republic means "a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch."

Democracy is defined as "A government in which the supreme power is invested in the people and exercised by them by reprentations of free elections." As far as the term "Majority Rules" it is a principle providing that a majority constituted by 50% plus one of an organized group that will have the power to make decisions."

What do I think? I think it’s time for you to begin watching the History Channel and take a class in American Histoy also.
